We are a school located near Tampa Bay in Florida with a high poverty rate. We serve over 2,000 students. We are a performing arts public charter school. I encourage, teach, and mentor my students through the arts.
Artsy people are unique and beautiful people to be near; they inspire others to do, think about, and become more than they already are.
I teach Earth and space science to 150 middle school students. My students are eclectic and artistic. They are preteens and teens full of ambition and emotions. They are sensitive, smart, sweet, and talented. They care about what they are learning about and who they are learning with. Many are very humorous, and some are insecure and looking for a safe place to just be themselves. My classes are inclusive and full of diversity.
My Project
Our watercolor pencils and sharpeners have seen better days, they are in need of a total refresh! We will be learning about the universe soon and I would love to offer students fresh and new watercolor pencils and colored pencils to create art with. In the past students would often draw the planets in great detail. I really enjoy mentoring students as they paint different night sky scenes with lots of details including nebulas and stars. Students learn all about a star's life cycle and how the color of a star relates to its temperature.
These art materials will make a difference in our classroom as many have told me they "never knew" about some kinds of art because they had never tried it out before.
Exposing students to many art forms enriches the everyday of school routines. Art helps kids remember and relate to the learning going on in class. They notice and comment on others work too.
Art improves the conversation in my classroom and peer relationships.
