Help me give my students lab kits to analyze water samples for coliform contamination and model chromosomes with pop beads and magnenetic centromeres to take them through cell division and inheritance of genes.
My students are from varying backgrounds and educational aspirations. I have some which receive special education services for social or emotional challenges and others with learning disabilities. Among my current students, there are over 14 languages spoken in their homes, 3 of which have extremely limited English skills and require translation support from either an aide or student helpers. Some have aspirations to go to college and become a doctor, and others are just trying to graduate from high school. Inspiring and engaging them all is a constant goal.
My Project
Access to clean water is something most of us take for granted. Yet many places in the US and the world have contaminated water sources. How do our cities and states determine our water quality and keep us safe?
These kits will allow the students to go through the motions of testing water for bacteria, determining possible sources of contamination, and designing solutions to reduce the environmental impacts of human activities linked to bacterial contamination of water.
These kits also come with online digital resources that simulate the lab experiences so if we are forced to use distance learning during the COVID-19 outbreak, we will be able to do so and then order the perishables to be used with next years students.
In addition, I've included reusable manipulative kits of Chromosomes that will be able to be used for many years to come. With the popularity of companies like 23 and Ancestry.com ready to tell you all about your history, the mechanism of how genes are passed down is on everyone's mind! These chromosome kits will allow students to use pop beads to manipulate the model chromosomes and work through the process of mitosis (cell division of body cells) and meiosis (cell division to create reproductive cells), show crossing over and see how we can get a mixture of our parents traits and characteristics.
These kits will do so much to bring a new level of interaction and excitement to the classroom!
