Water Quality Detectives

The cost of three books about water quality from Barnes and Noble, a WATER QUALITY SURVEY KIT from Carolina Biological Supply Company, and four Brita pitchers and filters from the Quill Corporation is $553, including shipping and fulfillment.

The drinking water in our classroom sometimes comes out brown and always tastes bad. We cannot continue to drink this potentially contaminated water. We have stopped drinking it altogether. Needless to say, my students are now very curious about the quality of our water in the classroom and around the school. We've decided to conduct our own investigation. We will complete data collection by having teams of students visually assess color and clarity and sample the water to asses the taste from different locations in the school. The water test kits will help us to assess the safety of the water and to determine if the presence of certain types of minerals make for better tasting water. We would like to use water filter pitchers to provide clean and refreshing water and to mimic the processing of water throught the water cycle. Students will read about the water cycle in order to learn how our water is naturally filtered and then processed in water treatment plants before it reaches our taps. This investigation will be part of our 3rd grade standards and part of our school-wide focus on environmental education.
