My Students

I am fortunate to have three classes of motivated, bright, hard-working Freshman. Students are Pre-AP (pre-advanced placement) so they tend to be serious about their schoolwork. That being said they do come from many diverse backgrounds and experiences. The students' maturity is an important aspect of this lab as I need to trust them and be confident in taking them off campus to a local creek.

My kids tend to "dive in" to this lab as they love getting into the creek and getting into nature.

So to prevent too much "diving in" we need new waders to avoid getting all wet yet still being able to access deeper portions of the creek.

My Project

We take a short hike to a local creek where we do some water quality assessment by taking a sampling of the local aquatic invertebrates. We also pick up trash along the creek while we are there.

Besides the scientific value of the lab, it's a great chance for kids who have never "played" in a creek to get some good old fashioned, natural, muddy experiences.

You would be shocked at how many kids have never done this!

This lab takes place in the spring when the water is high so chest waders are a must. The waders I have used the last few years are leaky, old and worn. I have purchased some with my own money but could use more.
