Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten in a beautifully culturally/racially/linguistically diverse, low-income, high-need public school.
Almost all of my twenty-four students are English Language Learners, and all of my students are courageous, enthusiastic learners who love to take on new challenges.
They create all day long: stories, paintings, buildings and more. They are so proud of their work and love to share their work and learning.
My kids have boundless energy and enthusiasm for learning, and they rise to every challenge they are given. They thrive with activities that are fun, hands-on, and meaningful.
My Project
My students are deeply captivated by the discoveries they make in our science center- watching snails slide, worms wiggle, seeds sprout, and caterpillars turn to chrysalids. After my students witness these marvels, I encourage them to share these observations with others, to both promote the joy of scientific discovery and to help them use new academic science vocabulary in a meaningful context. Currently, they use photos or drawings to record their observations. With the support of this project, my students can take these scientific renderings a step into abstraction using watercolor and printmaking to express their understandings through art.
Through this project, students will learn how science and discovery inspire art and how art can fuel the desire to investigate the scientific world through a new lens.
Your donation and support will open up a series of rich pathways between art and science for my students. As we know about kids, and adults too, we never forget what we learn with pleasure. Help us unlock the the art of science and the science of art!
