Imagine a classroom outside the walls of the typical school. A special place where students can explore and experience their environment first hand. A place where text books fade into the background as their excitement for learning flourishes. It is our mission to turn this dream into reality.
We currently have five sections of 2nd grade servicing over 110 students in our grade level alone.
As with any classroom we have a variety of students with a variety of different learning styles. We develop each lesson and activity around individual needs and interest so that each child has the best opportunity to be successful both socially and academically.
Teaching in an urban area has its perks however, when teaching environmental sciences it can be a challenge to provide hands-on experiences. Many students have not had first hand experiences in planting gardens or taking care of animals in their natural habitats. Our hope is that our garden will give them that opportunity. I truly believe that students learn best when they are able to use their hands to experience and explore what they are learning about.
My Project
As part of our 2nd grade curriculum we teach our students about many different life cycles including the life cycles of plants, insects, and other animals. Our goal is to provide a location at our school where students can experience these things in their natural habitat, allow students to provide the basic needs and care for plants and animals in our community, and get their hands a little dirty while learning!
Our second grade team has already started our project but needs some help from our community to finish it! We have been able to construct five raised flower beds for our garden. We have requested materials to start the growth of our plants such as: peat pots, two gardening tool sets, 5 spray bottles, plant labels, and seeds. We have also requested a few materials to teach students about the growth process and parts of the plant such as: a bean germination model, parts of a flower model, live plant root viewer, and bug viewers to study insects found in the garden
Please help us provide this hands-on experience for our children so that they can learn to be successful members of the community who care about their surroundings and all of the wonderful creatures in it.
