Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My name is Catherine Kennedy and I am a kindergarten teacher at Chicago International Charter School. My class is very enthusiastic and eager to learn. The students in my class come from all ethnic backgrounds, but most of them are Hispanic. Over 80% of the students are eligible for free lunch. Any lessons that focus on nature are especially helpful and exciting for them. They are not exposed to much nature here in the city. With the exciting season of Spring approaching, I thought a great activity to help my kindergarteners learn about plants and measuring would be to grow amaryllis plants. What is so exciting about these plants is the growth is fast and they plants grow so tall! We are measuring classroom objects already and the students are ready to be introduced to the ruler. If we are to win this grant, my students will track and record the growth of the plants and will also be learning graphing skills. The flower on this plant is breath taking and unexpected. In order to do the activity, I would like to compare 5 plants. There are 22 students in our class which would make up 5 groups with 4-5 students in each group. I believe this activity will be something the kids will never forget and help them to get excited about Springtime! Thank you and Happy Spring!
