Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and attend a Title 1 school. Many of them are English Learners. My students come to PE everyday excited and full of life. They enjoy any opportunity to be active and learn new skills.
What I love about my school is that the students are like a big family.
Many of them have been in classes together their entire school life. Their families know one another and they look out for each other. Most of my kids love the opportunity to come to Physical Education everyday and to be active.
My Project
I am creating this project to help me purchase gator skin Dodgeballs. These balls are awesome for a variety of games and activities. Yes, we do use them for Dodgeball which is one of the kids favorite games but they are used for so much more. We do not have a gym so these balls are used outside and are very durable. They are soft and lightweight which makes them ideal to use with younger kids while their skills are still developing. With this type of ball I don't have to worry about a student getting injured because they are so soft and lightweight.
I love to play a game called Angry Birds with them that came from the SPARK curriculum.
In the game the students set up "Bird Cages" using hula hoops and they try to knock down the other teams cages with the Dodgeballs. We also use them for a game called Battleship where kids have to work together on a "boat" while retrieving balls and rolling them at other boats to sink them. These balls are used for a wide variety of activities even as simple as teaching 5 year olds how to catch. I am currently down to only 5 of these balls. I have groups of about 35 kids so I no longer have enough balls to play some of their favorite games and activities.
