Help me give my students a projector so we can watch, listen, and learn from musical performances.
The students who choose to play an instrument in band at our school make up roughly 50% of students in grades 5-8 and 30% of students in grades 9-12. They're learning to play together, to count, to breathe, and to further engage their fine motor skills.
Many, especially the younger students, come from low-income households, and don't have the opportunity to go and watch a live concert or performance.
They never get to experience the feeling of sitting in an audience and being in awe of the performers and getting lost in the music. I want to bring this to my classroom and to them.
When playing a musical instrument, it's not only important to hear examples of what good music sounds like, but see examples of what good music looks like. Students are more actively engaged when they can watch AND listen to a performance, rather than just listen to it.
Watching older musicians play can inspire young band students, who may think, "If I keep practicing, some day I could sound like that!" Having a projector in the band room will enable students to watch musical performances and learn from them.
Students will get a clear picture of how they should look when they are playing: sitting with good posture, holding their instruments up, watching the director, and breathing deeply.
Students will also be able to watch and critique their own performance after a concert. I enjoy recording them multiple times throughout the year so they can hear how they've progressed. Being able to see and hear how they actually sound and have improved can be an eye opening experience.
Please help me inspire my students by bringing music to life for them!
