As a teacher of students in low income/single-parent family homes, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many are students with a range of disabilities, emotional disturbance and specific learning disability. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may deprive them of life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Gardening is a healthy, fun activity for children. Children develop new skills and learn about science and nature from growing their own food. There is a variety of interesting activities children can be involved in, such as planting, mulching, weeding and cooking.
Your generous donation to our project will help us get raised garden kits, a Root Vue farm set, a Sprout and Grow window and other supplies we need to create a garden of our own.
There is a myriad of scientific concepts we can discuss with our preschoolers when planting and tending to a garden. One study showed that children who participated in gardening projects scored higher in science achievement than those who did not. The wonder of seeing a garden grow will spark our kids to ask questions like: Why do the plants need sun? How does the plant “drink” water? Why are worms good for the plants?
Add a little math while gardening by measuring how much plants are growing from week to week or counting the flowers on each plant. We will also be able to supplement the experience of gardening with books about plants or a photo journal of the plants that we are growing.
