This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 3 year olds are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They thrive while living in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. Some have gone through more in their young lives than many of us will ever have to endure in a lifetime. Yet every day, they walk down a hill to school where they are able to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood and find solace in our classroom. Despite all of the challenges they face outside the school walls, they still come to school each day ready and excited to learn.
My students blossom with the educational and enrichment opportunities being offered, which helps them to build their background knowledge and exposes them to things they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.
For all of them, coming to school is where they have any opportunities to build their academic and social foundations to set them up for success later in life.
My Project
My preschool students have a unit of study on buildings and how to construct various structures using different materials. It is a very hands-on unit of study with lots of opportunities to explore building with various materials but they lack the materials to do so. The cardboard blocks will give them the opportunity to build a structure that is large enough for them to fit in, without the danger of it hurting them if it falls. The porcupine blocks will also give them a sensory opportunity to build with a different material.
Most of my students have also never been exposed to the elements of constructing a building and the materials and resources that go into building a building.
The books being requested will give them the exposure and background knowledge of what goes into the construction of a building and will be able to apply that learning to their structures in class.
