Beginning the journey for life-long learning starts with reading. Our students have just embarked on this adventure. I would like to foster their momentum and love of literacy by putting high quality and meaningful books in their hands.
In Southern California, we get quite a diverse population in our classrooms.
On one end of the spectrum, we have students who have attended preschool for up to two years, attend one year of developmental kinder, and then start kindergarten ready to soar! Then we have the opposite extreme of the spectrum; some students arrive with no school experience at all when they walk into kindergarten. Despite those differences, all of our parents have the same desires for their children's learning to grow. Teachers in my district have the same goal in mind: build for student success! All students deserve access to a quality education. By using leveled guided reading libraries that were founded on research-based methods, we teachers accommodate the various learners in each classroom, differentiate instruction and help kindergartners' literacy skills soar!
My Project
With high-interest topics, colorful characters, fun-filled story plots and level appropriate text, our library makes it easy to develop reading fluency and increase deeper comprehension! A great way to provide differentiated instruction, our library includes 45 different titles that are leveled using "Fountas & Pinnell's" system, all organized into easy-access book bins. Each level comes with a set of 5 fiction paperback books, plus handy stickers to organize the books by level so kids can easily find the books they need. Having a complete set of level appropriate books will help me facilitate pulling small groups to deliver guided reading instruction. The organized bins and cart will allow easy access for our class to get our hands on great books! My hope is that I will foster a love for reading that will prepare my kindergartners for continued learning success as they leave for 1st grade.
Having my own set of guided reading books will help me work more efficiently as a teacher; I will spend less time searching for level appropriate books to borrow and more time focused on meaningful instruction with my students.
These books will also help my students learn to read and build their confidence as readers, which is a skill they will use long after they leave my classroom!
