This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class serves students with severe intellectual disabilities, which means they function many years behind their peers. They are nonverbal, communicating through the use of communication devices, gestures, and even facial expressions. Most are in wheelchairs and require lifting and frequent repositioning.
All are fully dependent on adults for all hygiene, feeding, and mobility needs.
They are sweet children who do the best they can. We give them intensive support and enthusiastic encouragement, and celebrate each and every small milestone they reach!
My Project
Laundry needs are a must! Our old machines stopped working last year, and we are looking for funding to replace them. Due to physical needs, our students often need a change of clothes during the school day. The washer & dryer is used about once a day. The students have many hygiene needs, including bibs, blankets, washcloths, and towels. In addition, students practice laundry skills such as transferring clothes between machines, sorting, and folding, when provided adult assistance.
Students learn skills as well as feeling clean and ready for the day!
These machines are the best choices because their simplicity allows the students to participate in helping out with laundry!
