Our students are AWESOME!! They are truly Kids At Hope! They come from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds with many social and emotional needs. Our Elementary School is an inner city Phoenix School with 100% of our students receiving free lunch. The students strive to do their best even though some come from challenging home environments. Students thrive in a caring, positive and hands-on learning environment. Our teachers strive to provide a 21st Century learning environment that engages, challenges and prepares students for the college and work environment. Our students sometimes do not have some of the necessary items to get them school ready, for example some of our students do not have their own washer and dryer, so sometimes they don't come with clean clothes. When this happens we have given the students a new uniform but when this happens often it cost the school a lot of money. if we had a washer and dryer we could wash their clothes while they are wearing the school provided uniform and then change back into their clothes.
My Project
Providing a washer and dryer at our school will help our students by boosting students' self -esteem and attendance. Students sometimes are embarrassed to show up at school wearing dirty clothes. So they don't come to school. Nationwide, teachers say that nearly 20 percent of students struggle with access to clean clothes — and that those kids are more likely than other children to experience chronic absenteeism, missing at least 10 percent of school in a single year. Missing school often takes a devastating toll on student academic performance. Also, our school is a Title 1 school we provide free breakfast and lunch and if the students misses school for dirty clothes will he/she miss 2 meals too?
