Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in room 173 are an inspiring group of young adults. Each student comes with their own story, their own struggles, their own barriers. But together, they build each other up and support one another no matter what. The classroom is a functional life skills class. That means, each student has a moderate to severe disability. However, their immense capacity for love and compassion, is nothing short of incredible.
We are small, but we are mighty.
I believe we can make a difference in our community this year. These students, my students, inspire me everyday to be better and to do better. They are not held back by anything. Each day is an opportunity to put a smile on someones face, to make someone feel loved and welcomed. It is an honor to teach these young adults. They are a true testament to what hard work and perseverance can do for a small community.
My Project
The students in Room 173 have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. That means, many of the everyday tasks we take for granted, are very difficult for my students. Washing our hands, combing our hair, or brushing our teeth, is not easy and requires a lot of hands-on practice in the classroom. For that reason, we dedicate most of our day to practicing and generalizing functional daily skills. This requires a lot of visual aides and materials.
Help us stock our classroom with toothpaste, hairbrushes, wet wipes, and other supplies!
We live in a small farming community and have a tiny budget. I can no longer afford to buy toothpaste and toothbrushes for my growing classroom. For the past two years my aides and I have purchased all of our hygiene supplies out of pocket. We also purchase velcro, laminating sheets, and other office supplies to create visual aides and communication binders for my students. Most of my students do not have independent speech and need visual pictures to communicate their wants and needs. This project will help stock our classroom and provide my students with the products they need to lead a healthy, hygienic life!
