Help me give my students jackets to help keep them warm during the Winter months.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The days of having students sit quietly at desks lined up in a row listening to lectures are long gone. My students thirst for hands-on learning. They enjoy working with their peers, participating in class projects, and being creative.
Often times, they don't come to school with the tangible tools they need to learn.
When these tools are provided, they thrive academically and socially. My school is located in a low-income area, and many of the students live within walking distance of the school. Many of them are responsible for getting themselves up and ready for school without the assistance of an adult.
There are times when this causes them to be late for school, but they do the best they can to catch up with the activities they missed. These same students have trouble getting the materials they need to complete classroom assignments and projects. I don't take off points for not having materials. I do my best to provide each of my students with the tools they need to ensure equity and fairness.
Having a jacket while walking to school as well as one to put on when our classroom gets chilly will help my students stay warm and healthy. Being warm will keep my students focused, on task, and help them master grade level material.
My students will not only be focused on their learning but also spend less time absent from school because the jackets will cut down on common colds.
Some of my students are not fortunate enough to wear the clothing they need to keep warm. They often underdress. This adds to the illnesses that they expose themselves to.
