My students are all newcomers who have recently immigrated to the USA. Some are refugees from civil wars such as the one in Yemen while many others have come from China or Central America to flee poverty and violence and to seek a better future for themselves and their families.
Imagine going to school every day in a new country, in a new language, and then working until 1 a.m.
in a restaurant so that you can pay your rent and send the rest of your earnings to support your family in your home country. Many of my students work 40+ hours a week to support their families in addition to struggling to learn English. They are incredibly resilient and inspirational, but they need all the support they can get.
My Project
Many of my students come from low-income, underrepresented communities in the San Francisco Bayview District. Being new immigrants, they have to work to help support their families back home while also paying for their bills. In gaining these independent living skills, my goal is to ensure every student is able to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In order to perform well academically, it is essential to be well physically, mentally, and emotionally. Many of my students come to school sleep-deprived and hungry, as they have long hour work shifts after school. The food purchased will ensure that no student goes through the day hungry and the hygiene products will ensure that the girls at our school are supplied with the feminine products they may not be able to afford.
