Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school serves almost 400 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Eighty percent qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.
We are a school that specializes in business, promotes college and career readiness, offers year-round experiences that include many work-based and service learning opportunities, for all our hard working students including those economically disadvantaged.
Although my students are hard-working the winter months and battles of public transportation is a struggle. They often arrive late chilled from the snow and the rain which is no way to start a rigorous school day.
My Project
My students are hard-working and dedicated and try to take every opportunity to succeed while in school, getting them to school in the winter months can be a challenge. Absenteeism and lateness in school is often directly linked to high poverty. Many of the students are living at or below the poverty line, whether at home or in temporary shelters. Fifty-seven percent of our students missed more than 18 days of school last year.
My goal this year is to ensure that all my students have 90% or better attendance and my entrepreneurship students are going to lead this initiative by offering hot warm cocoa on NYC's bad weather days in an effort to improve on-time attendance and academic learning.
Absenteeism rises during bad weather winter months, especially when battling mass transit breakdowns and delays. My student leaders want to prove being in school is worth the battle of the MTA.
Providing small, warm comforting drink in the morning will provide many benefits knowing someone cares about them, that include improving academic performance, attendance, and engagement, and reducing hunger and food insecurity through PBIS. Boasting their emotional needs will allow them to grow throughout the rigorous project based performance and standardized testing day, as well as teach them how making better choices will make them better students, productive employees and lead to a higher quality of life, now and in the future.
