I teach band at Trask High School in Pender County, NC. We opened the school four years ago with limited resources. However, in that short amount of time, the band has established a reputation for excellence.
As with any new school with limited resources, we acquire necessary items a little bit at a time. Most of the items we have purchased for the band have come about through fundraising and a voluntary fee the students pay to participate in band. Even with the best efforts of our students, there is still much that we need.
At the present, I have a wonderful group of band students who are somewhat young. We are trying to build musicality by the study of scales and technical studies. We are in need of a set of exercise books so that we can work on these every day, consistently. The only studies we have had so far are ones that I have written by hand. As a band director, I do not have a lot of extra time to write technical studies! It is our goal to build our skills to such a level that we can participate in our district's concert festival. I would also like for my students to participate in our district's solo and ensemble festival for the first time.
My students work extremely hard to be the best they can be. I want to be able to give them the supplies they need to be successful.
