Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Latinos are the largest and fastest growing minority group in the United States. Latinos are also the largest minority group living in poverty. Latinos are also lagging behind all other minority groups in the U.S. in obtaining a four-year degree. More than 95% of my middle school students are Puerto Ricans, most living in poverty.
It is time to close the achievement gap and help my students, our future leaders of tomorrow, have the high quality, rigorous education they deserve!
My inclusive science class serves 90 middle school students daily, many living with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, post traumatic stress, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. There is virtually no science budget. The science room is an old elementary school room and is not properly equipped. It has taken a lot of creativity to make it all work for my enthusiastic science learners!
My Project
Most of my middle school students walk to/from school. Many of them arrive under-dressed and very cold. Many times on very cold days, students will not attend school. Low attendance means low amounts of learning is occurring for those students.
Please help my students arrive to school ontime and ready to learn by providing gloves, hats and handwarmers to warm up their walk to and from school.
These gender-neutral hats and gloves will make a difference for many low-income students that do not have the proper winter attire. Your donation will make it possible for my students to brave the cold Massachusetts weather as they travel to school each day this winter.
