Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are as diverse as New York City in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and ability. Our school demographics are sixty-two percent Hispanic, twenty-eight percent black, five percent Asian and three percent white, with over 85% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.

I have students who come to school with so little and students coming to school without breakfast and without backpacks.

Some cannot live at home with their parents and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges including mental health issues, gun violence, and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all with the educational opportunities they deserve.

My Project

Our AP students have been through so much this year. They have had to start over a month late due to Covid-19, and started the year significantly behind. Then they had to adapt to the entire course being moved to remote learning. So many of the exciting and engaging activities that make AP Environmental Science so special had to be dropped. That meant no laboratory activities, no field trips, no gardening on top of no face-to-face interactions with their peers. They had to learn how to manage more work on their own, and deal with that added stress on top of taking an AP course, and Covid-19 spreading through our community, and all its impacts. There has not been a lot of bright spots in our year so far.

We want to bring some joy and energy to our AP Environmental Science students by bringing them class sweatshirts to keep them warm and connected this year.

It has been very hard to find any way to connect students across a remote learning landscape, but it is our hope that by providing them with something tangible, not digital, they can feel connected to one another and to the school. In addition to keeping them physically warm this winter, we want to warm their spirits as well. By celebrating them, and all they have done it is our hope to raise spirits and community within our AP class.
