Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in the 9/10 Earth Science class are recent immigrants who are learning both science and English. Our students work in teams with classmates who speak many different languages, to learn English together through content.
With students from all over the world, speaking over ten different languages, the classroom is a very exciting place.
Students are learning new vocabulary every day and experiencing science in a new language. Groups work together to create models, design labs, and record podcasts about science.
My Project
Today was our first snowy day of the school year, and many students left the school without the warmest of clothes. Our school is lucky to be able to provide coats to students who need it, and many students have a good winter coat. But accessories are often forgotten about, and students leave for their walk to the subway with bare fingers and heads.
Often a snow day means low attendance; these hats and gloves will be able to supplement the coats we can provide, so we can send students home warm, and ready to come back to school bundled up the next day!
Students do not typically tell their teachers when they need warmer clothes, but when I am able to offer, I often have many students taking gloves, hats and scarves home with them. I would love to have a large quantity available so no student feels the stigma of having to ask; they can be available to all! Thank you to those who are able to donate to keep our students warm this winter.
