Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a fourth grade gifted and talented class in a small farming community. Seven out of my 20 students are gifted, while the other 13 are of mixed ability. Some of my students read four levels above grade level, while some read three levels below. They are a very diverse group!
Most of our population are English Language Learners.
My students are hungry to learn and question. They amaze me daily with their interesting ideas and points of view. We incorporate projects in class to strengthen their creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.
My Project
The school bell rings at 8:00am. Teachers open their doors at 7:45am. Bus riders arrive at school at 6:50am. About 30 students stand outside, on the playground for over an hour before they get to settle into their warm classroom seats. These kiddos don't complain; they continue to play tether ball with their hands balled up ind their sweatshirt sleeves. They huddle in the bathrooms by the hand warmers trying to warm the chill off of their finger tips. The supplies I am requesting are just a little step in a warmer direction for these kids that have to be at school so early and have to be in the cold, winter weather. Through this project, I will highlight the importance of the Character Counts Pillar, kindness. Students will learn about random acts of kindness and how it is important to be kind and spread kindness in our world. Students will post their kind acts on a cafeteria bulletin board to encourage others to also act kindly.
