Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students have Autism and they are in a post-secondary vocational center for Moderate and Severely Cognitively Impaired, Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired, Physically Impaired, Otherwise Health Impaired, and students with Autism. The Transition Center, which serves post-secondary special education students ages 18-26, is a one-of-a-kind Center-Based educational facility that has created a continuum of services for students with disabilities to ensure students have access to an age-appropriate learning environment.

We believe that the transition process is best experienced through authentic life training and real world connections.

Students are prepared for the world of work and to become productive citizens with the necessary skills that will increase their quality of life. Students attending the transition center earn a certificate of completion. The goal is to provide students with skill training that will transfer to the real adult world. Students learn in a non-traditional classroom setting that promotes independent living and employability skills in real life environments.

My Project

My students with autism have decided to pay it forward by providing warm winter coats to at risk students in our school district. The warm, winter, insulated and waterproof coats will be given to students that are in great need of a reliable winter coat. There are students with special needs, in foster care, homeless, and/or dealing with child protective services.

The students that will benefit have suffered great loss.

Some of these students have one or both parents that have loss their lives to violence. There are students that have parents that are incarcerated. Unfortunately, these students' parents are below the poverty line and can not afford to purchase a winter coat for their child. These coats will ensure that these students will be warm this winter when walking or catching a bus to school. These coats will boost these students self-esteem and ensure that these young people will be protected from the harsh winter that is coming.
