Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a variety of high school-aged students who have various learning disabilities and individual education plans. As a result, my students receive educational services in either a sub-separate class or a resource room setting.
Many of my students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and could use additional support with personal items as well school supplies.
My students already have enough challenges to face without the added factors of being clean and dressed warm enough to come to school. Some of my students have language disabilities, others experience challenges with attention, and others are on the autism spectrum. They are struggling readers and writers who, with the right tools and support in place, can make solid progress during the year.
My students are sweet, funny, bright kids with diverse backgrounds and needs. Many are English Language Learners. They are a lively group of scholars and it's a pleasure to work with teens who want to do the necessary work to overcome their challenges in and out of the classroom.
Even though they have learning disabilities, my students have drive and are destined for success. Anything is attainable when placed within reach.
My Project
My students need warm boots to wear in New England as they travel outdoors to and from their classes in inclement weather.
My students all need footwear that will keep their feet warm and dry as they travel to their classes.
They do not all have the financial means to make this possible. They need footwear that are comfortable to walk in and also keeps them dry in the winter snow and rain of New England. There are many days when they come into class and they are completely wet. Appropriate footwear will allow them to have dry feet, instead of cold or soaked toes.
