Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students from my senior economics and government classes participate in our Mountain Sports Club, which opens opportunities to explore nature and new environments outside of the regular classroom.
My students challenge themselves and conquer fears, rock climbing and trekking through the Sierras.
This is huge since our district is largely low income. Many of our students' families can not afford visits to the mountains.
They are excited to explore the world through adventure and hope to make the upcoming club bigger than ever.
My Project
Every year our two clubs, ESA and Mountain Sports grow. We will be taking an October trip to the Eastern Sierra with temps dropping to 15-20 degrees overnight with around 20 kids.
Staying warm and reducing weight is our goal with this new gear.
Sleeping bags that are down, which are the warmest, are expensive, so we try to update our gear every chance we can. We hope to increase one warm sleep system with this project. The gear will be specifically used in the back-country where warmth is key.
We have been fortunate to travel to many splendid places in the Sierra and we have froze on occasion too! Bit by bit we will have the warmest, lightest bags for a group of 20 students!
