I have kids from all walks of life. Some of whom have “never read a book before.” However, once we read The Outsiders the spark in their eyes come out and they can’t put it down. A love for reading is ignited- even if very briefly. Every one of them can relate or sympathize with one of the characters.
There are days when I ask them to write about what is going on in their lives and the tears start to flow.
Some come to school as an escape from their lives outside, like Johnny they don't want to be home. I want to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment, like Darry, that allows them to feel safe, excited, and open to things. Whether it be reading a book for the first time or writing about themselves, everyone deserves to have opportunities to look at life like Ponyboy does and the environment is half of the battle. Think about it- would you feel more inclined to do your best in a room that looks like it has love in it? Or one that hasn't been cared for since 1993? I want them to walk in and take a breath of relief.
My Project
I will use chalkboard paint to re-purpose my upper cabinets in my room to become anchor charts. Paint to cover up the baby blue walls and wallpaper to cover up the chipping away lower cabinet doors. Right now our room is a sight to see and gives a heavy vibe, one that makes you want to walk out as soon as you walk in.
By painting and making it my own, I can truly feel like it is my space and will move that energy to my students.
It will also help my students feel like I put some thought into our room, that I want to welcome them in there, not just that they are there because they have to be. I want them to want to come in.
