Warm Adventure Clothes and Backpacks Full o' Food!
My students need clothes to keep them warm and dry (raincoats, fleece jackets, thermal tops and bottoms, etc.) at recess and on field trips, as well as backpacks full of food to take home each weekend.
My students, and all the students in my school, are amazingly resilient. For some of them, just getting through our doors to begin their day presents many challenges. Yet, once they're with us, they know they will be safe, eat two good meals, enjoy the support of friends and teachers, and grow their brains all the way until the afternoon bell.
Life in rainy, rural Washington isn't easy for children experiencing homelessness, but our school embraces these kids with the warmth, nourishment, safety and love that they need to flourish and grow.
While working with our counselor, students learn to articulate their physical and emotional needs. As adults, we have a responsibility to help meet those unmet needs. Our students, using restorative justice practices, develop self-awareness, conflict-resolution skills and deep friendships. In academics, they apply themselves with determination and seek out opportunities to shine.
From pre-school to 6th grade, a percentage these delightful students - hungry to learn and hungry for friendships - have the extra hurdle of experiencing homelessness. For those students, it is extra important that we support their physical needs, so they can resume the important social learning on the playground and the brain-building of the classroom.
My Project
When it's raining for weeks straight in Washington, my students, particularly those without stable housing, need warm and waterproof clothes that enable them to keep playing out at recess -- and keep them comfortable and learning on outdoor field trips. Some of our students' families have also asked the school for extra food on weekends, when school breakfast and lunch aren't available. The backpacks and the initial food in this order will help us begin a program for select students to bring a backpack full of meals and snacks home on weekends.
All children deserve to learn on full stomachs and to enjoy outdoor playtime, regardless of their families' housing situation or finances.
This project will especially allow 4th-6th graders, who don't have closets full of clothing, to be outfitted for any weather. In addition, it will supply twenty-four pre-K through 6th grade families who are experiencing homelessness to have a boost to their weekend meal budget. Children grow healthy, strong and smart when they and their caretakers are well nourished.
Rain or shine, rich or poor, our students are resilient -- building friendships on the playground, asking thoughtful questions in class, and preparing to make a difference in our world.
