Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Speed up!! My students are used to things moving at a faster pace. Except when it comes to math. We are using paper and pencil to demonstrate our understanding during guided practice. However, lapboards would be a much faster way for giving quick checks of student's understanding.
I teach in a title 1 school where the entire population is on free lunch.
We have a high population of ELL students as well. They are hard working students who come from low-income families. Their families want them to succeed at school, but can't always provide the materials needed to help their child be successful. With no budget for the classroom, donations have been asked from parents. Unfortunately, donations have been minimal for the start of our school year. Parents are doing everything they can to support their child. But it is difficult times.
My Project
My students will be using these lapboards primarily in math class. This will help me see who is understanding the concept being taught and who needs immediate intervention. Unfortunately when students use paper and pencil during guided practice, it is hard to see who truly understands and who is glancing around the room. However, with lapboards you can watch who immediately writes, who struggles, who finishes first, and who never comes up with an answer. As the teacher, I can then do small group intervention during independent practice. The lapboards will also be used during reading class, especially when teaching grammar. Asking students to write down answers to grammar questions gives me immediate feedback and lets me know who needs more help with the grammar lesson. Lapboards are a more efficient, easy way to identify students needs with a lesson than paper and pencil.
My project is so important because it provides me with an easy, immediate visual as to who understands the concept being taught, who has no clue, and who is trying to cheat because they don't understand.
This project is also high interest for students. They love working on something other than paper and pencil and pay attention more because they love working on lapboards.
