My students need to expand their vocabularies so they can ace the AP Exams! Merriam-Websters Dictionary and Thesaurus & Cracking the AP History Exam books will do it!

My Students

Everyday we take on the challenge of the AP by agreeing to "throw down the hammer!" Few things are more satisfying than pushing ourselves beyond what we thought possible. These new AP students are "in it to win it" and are hungry for the chance to show the world what they can do!

My students are amazing, resilient, and passionate.

They care about the community. We are a Title 1 school, with nearly 100% free/reduced meals. Many of the students have endured hardship or trauma ranging from homelessness to violent crimes, the loss of a parent or sibling, or abuse. Despite these challenges, our students show up and give their best everyday. Most of the AP students have not experienced the rigor of a college level class, and it can be daunting. This is particularly true when nearly half of the students are below grade level in reading/writing and more than 30% require Special Education services. The amount of reading, homework, and writing required is more than most have ever experienced. Despite these challenges, student choose to take the AP classes and we welcome all students who seek the challenge. Indeed, we encourage students to take the challenge and pledge our support in their endeavor.

My Project

My students need Merriam-Webster's Dictionary and Thesaurus & Cracking the AP History Exam books. The resources, particularly the thesauri, will provide a huge boost to student writing and expression. Given the writing demands in AP US and World History, word choice and clarity are paramount. We currently have a single, tattered thesaurus, which cannot meet the demands of the class. Additionally, the students have embraced and reference our "Dead Word Wall," which includes words such as "stuff," "things," "big," and "very." They are quick to catch these abominations in their own writing and peer reviews. Finding replacement words are more challenging. A thesaurus will allow students to identify and use more academically appropriate words in their writing. The Test Prep books will help students who have fallen behind, or who struggle with reading the textbooks, access the content and prepare for the AP exams. The combination of the resources will give every student an opportunity to succeed.

Your donation can make an incredible difference in the lives of my students.

Taking an AP class gives students a glimpse at the rigor and expectations in college. These additional resources say, "You can do this, and here are some additional tools to help you succeed!" Making it through the class is an accomplishment for any student. For students who do well on the exam, it may be the first time they see themselves as college bound and college ready. They may be the first in their family to go.
