Wanted: The Graveyard Book for our Millie Award!

My students need 15 copies of Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book" to read as a nominee for our school's local Millie Award.

My Students

Our students love reading the six nominees for our local Millie Award, but purchasing enough copies to go around has become too expensive for our library.

The Millie Award is designed to draw all students to reading, but its target audience is our reluctant readers and emerging English language learners.

Our students attend a public middle school, grades 6 through 8. They are typical middle school students--enthusiastic about things they love. The Millies are designed to get them to love reading!

My Project

Each year, we (students, teachers, and library staff) choose six books to read as our Millie nominees. These usually have to be paperback books because of the cost. This year, one of our selections, The Graveyard Book, postponed its paperback release until next school year. This is forcing us to purchase hardbound copies. We have ordered a few copies, but need 15 more to circulate to even more students. They will love the spooky graveyard setting and wonderful ghostly characters in this Newberry Award winning book.

Middle school is the last chance to catch our reluctant readers and turn them on to reading.

A book as great as The Graveyard Book will draw them in from the very first sentence, and show them that books can be a wonderful escape and inspiration.
