The students I serve are amazingly resilient. Many come from very economically disadvantaged households. They face many obstacles and trauma that many of us couldn't possibly imagine. I'm constantly in awe of their desire to persevere and let nothing get in their way of succeeding and learning. For most of my students, English is their second language, so one of my biggest goals is to provide them with a strong phonemic awareness and phonics foundation accompanied by a vast amount of vocabulary. Additionally, I want to provide a safe and nurturing environment where they feel safe to learn and thrive!
Regardless of the circumstances that they are facing, my culturally-rich students come to school eager to learn, succeed, persevere, and have fun while doing it all!
They're incredible little human beings that will one day be productive citizens of this great nation! Until that day comes, I will do my best to provide them with the strong foundation that they require in order for them to be successful.
I recently started reading The Bad Guys to my students to introduce them to chapter books. They were hooked with the first chapter.
I want to foster a love of reading in my students with great books that are humorous and age-appropriate.
So far, they are loving the series. On a daily basis, I'm being asked to read several chapters from ALL of my students. The cliff hangers keep them coming back for more. Last year, some of my students bought the first few books in the series. Perhaps some more students this year will too or they may buy books from a different series. As long as they are excited about the books they're getting, that's all that matters.
