My students need young adult books of all genres to enhance our classroom library, such as "List in the City," "Snitch," "Black Hole," "Nothing," "The Bite of the Mango," "The Dreamer," "Chicken Soup for the Soul," "How I Made it to Eighteen," "Anne Frank," and many more young adult books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Reading a book that fully captivates you is an experience we all enjoy. I want my students to have those same experiences by reading young adult books.
My students attend an urban, public school in WI.
The students are energetic teenagers who want their educational experience to make connections to their lives. While I try to connect all the literature we read to my students, they are more receptive to reading books that mirror their lives. Unfortunately, my school does not have access to many young adult books that reflect the lives of my students. At this time, there are not funds available to purchase books. Reading a young adult novel will allow my students a space to personally connect to the literature and be fully captivated by a book.
My Project
My students need young adult books of all genres to enhance our classroom library such as List in the City, Snitch, Black Hole, Nothing, The Bite of the Mango, The Dreamer, Chicken Soup for the Soul Teens Talk, How I Made it to Eighteen, and Anne Frank. My students silently read everyday. I do have a small library, but very few of the books are written specifically for young adults. My students ask me everyday for books with people "just like them" so that they can connect to the story. My students desperately want to read, but right now, they don't feel engaged with any text I can offer. The books on this classroom library list will provide my students a chance to interact with literature in a way that will keep them actively reading for years to come.
Once my students become engaged with silent reading through the young adult books provided by this project, I know my students will appreciate reading more.
They will finally be captivated by a book, just like we all were when we were growing up.
