Wanted: Real STEM Scientists to Mentor Military Kids
My students need to interact with real world scientists. Access to The JASON Project will allow my students to become mentors of scientists performing STEM everyday.
How can I encourage students to think like scientists? I can introduce them to the men and women themselves! With access to real world scientists, my students will discover how current research is being done. Currently my students don't see themselves as future scientists. I want to change that.
Our school is 60% military with many of the remaining population being middle to lower income families.
Teaching a highly transient population is a unique challenge. This year, I am excited to implement STEM as a daily practice in my classroom. However, with a population such as ours, community support is sometimes inconsistent and acquiring the resources necessary to engage young learners in STEM challenges is difficult. Our students are eager to be pioneers of STEM integration.
Our digital learners need daily immersion with media and technology to acquire the 21st Century skills needed to become successful in the job markets of the future.
My Project
Web based programs like 'The JASON Project' allow students of all abilities to interact with media sources as well as have text read aloud to those students who struggle with reading.
Consistent immersion with real time data and text will improve my students' science understanding, as well as their ability to interpret non-fiction texts.
Students will be able to interact with real scientists, their research data and other students around the world.
Having access to 'The JASON Project', I hope that my students will begin to see science as a global community that works together.
This global vision is something that my students are currently lacking and access to this site will help them to begin to open their minds to the possibilities available for them in the future. I also hope that frequent immersion with actual science research will give them the confidence they need to form strong opinions and ideas.
