Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember that first, magical moment you found a book that spoke to you? That completely engrossing, can't-put-it-down feeling of finally having found a book that unlocked a love of reading? The students in my class share in that delight for reading. They eagerly raid my classroom library so that they can devour the next book in their adventure series or enjoy a new graphic novel.
My students are bright, curious, and eager to read books in which they can find their lived experiences reflected back to them.
Because many of the students in my low-income classroom do not have ready access to books at home, my classroom library is a critical part of my students' reading journeys! I am a 7th grade English/Language Arts teacher in a low-income urban middle school, and I know that the books that I provide for my students may be the only literature that they have the opportunity to enjoy. My students nevertheless bring an enthusiasm for reading each and every day!
My Project
I have many students this year who speak almost no English. While they do receive services as English Language Learners, these students nonetheless are struggling in an environment where the instruction occurs exclusively in English. I would like to be able to provide each of these students with a copy of our class novel in Spanish as a supplementary text.
My Spanish-speaking students are just as deserving of the opportunity to participate in the upcoming unit on the novel "The Outsiders" as their English-speaking classmates.
These students often have to work twice as hard as many of their peers, and I would like the ability to scaffold their learning by providing them with a copy of the text in Spanish. Once they are able to comprehend the basic plot of the story in Spanish, they will be able to participate more productively in class discussions and learn at a much higher level. My Spanish-speaking students would benefit enormously from the opportunity to read the class novel in a language they can comprehend!
