Wanted: New Books to Expand on Classroom Diversity
My students need children's books like "The Boy With the Rainbow Heart" and "Hattie and Hudson," which will help provide rich and teachable moments in our diverse classroom.
Our students come from a diverse background and I believe it is important to have literature in the classroom that represents the diversity within. The students in my class work hard every day to learn more about one another, as they strive to do their personal best work: academically and socially.
They are learning about growth mindset and how to be inclusive of all who enter our classroom.
My class consists of 24 amazing students. Of those 24, 2 of them receive ELL services, 3 receive specialized education services, and 2 of them are in speech. As their teacher, it is my job to model how to treat one another.
My Project
My students must identify themselves in some of the books they read to have an increased interest in the literature. Education is constantly changing, but who we are is not. Students need diverse literature at all ages.
Children's books can act as both mirrors and windows into the world.
I aim to provide a rich variety of literature that reflects the diversity in my classroom as well as literature that opens the door to conversation about other cultures. As children learn about "other" cultures at an early age, we can help to reduce stereotypes. Books also show children a broad variety of role models.
I would like to thank you for your consideration as you support funding a project to provide rich, diverse literature for my first and second grade students!
