My students come from a variety of backgrounds and all at a different level of learning. Currently there are 5 languages spoken in my classroom other than English. My school has over half the students on free and reduced lunches.
The classroom contains half preschool and half Kindergarten students.
The children typically stay in my classroom for a two year period. This helps me build a strong relationship with my students and their families. It also allows me to continue the child's learning without stopping between grades.
The Montessori philosophy encourages students to work at their pace and level while exploring areas in the classroom: Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Science, Cultural and Practical Life. Giving the children these opportunities to move around the classroom as they choose, they become independent learners and goal setters. Once a student masters a skill they move on to the next. There is never an end to learning in the classroom no matter the child's skill level!
My Project
For many of the students books are not readily accessible in their homes. This makes it that much more important to have a variety of books for the students to use in the classroom. The books will be used for the students to "shop" each week. Meaning they will be able to pick books that interest them but at the same time encourage and challenge their reading skills. It is also imporant to have both fiction and nonfiction books represented in the classroom which is why I am so excited by this series! Giving the students a variety of books and the power of choosing their own books, sets a strong foundation for successful readers!
