A lonely old bag needs company! My fifth grade students attending a low-income school with highly mobile population has just added a portable classroom this year to accommodate the overcrowded classrooms in the school building. Two years ago, I had 32 students in my classroom. This portable has allowed my number of students to be reduced to 26 students making a big difference in the learning capacity of these high-need students.
Bags being "bagged" at retail stores! The local retail stores do not carry bean bag chairs approved by the Board of Health. Bean bag chairs can't be covered in a cloth material, as are the only bean bag chairs I have seen in the several stores I have where I have checked. They must be covered in a material that can be sanitized daily, such as are these bean bags I'm requesting. I currently have one lone bag that I found several years ago. It needs more "company" so that my students don't argue over the one comfortable place to read in our portable classroom. Having 6 different colored bean bags chairs would also help brighten up this portable classroom!
If I had five more bean bag chairs, my students would have their own space to recline and enjoy silent reading time, yet also be able to read in groups.
Your help will motivate my students to read more! Once a student gets on the bean bag in our class he/she hates to leave, the other students resent this, so I have to rotate students every fifteen minutes! Having five additional bean bag chairs would give more students a place to read individually. Also, it would allow me to have a group reading area for one of my centers during Language Arts time. The students would not only read more to themselves, but they would be able to improve their reading fluency by reading orally in a group.
