My students are smart, curious, fun-loving, creative, hardworking, helpful, and kind. My 23 students represent countries all over the world, as well as learning levels from kindergarten to fifth grade. Some of my students need daily intervention while others need daily enrichment.
My school consists of about 1,000 students of diverse backgrounds and diverse learning abilities.
We have a growing population of ELL students and students for which we implement interventions in reading and math, as well as students needing enrichment to acquire success for their educational needs.
Our school does not receive Title I funding; therefore, the technology that we have in our classroom is limited and has to be funded through other means. Our school has an amazing administration and staff who are dedicated to meet each of these diverse needs. The environment of our school is warm, nurturing, and respectful.
My Project
My students need an iPad with a protective case to add additional technology to our classroom so that students can use it to reinforce skills in all academic areas. During math, my students will be able to practice skills by using interactive math apps. Specifically, two apps were purchased that contain math skills for the grade below and the grade above ours for differentiation. During guided reading, students can access many sites with digital books to read or listen to or go to websites that have games for practicing decoding and comprehension skills. Another app we have been using this year is called Seesaw, which is an online learning journal. Students can take a photo, add text or voice, add a drawing, or create a presentation. Students can share their work & learning with others in the class and with me and their family. This leads to more collaboration, and it allows students to reflect on their learning throughout the year. It also lets parents stay up-to-date on what their child is learning. Students are not yet able to use Seesaw as much as they would like to or as much as I would like them to because students have to take turns on the iPads we currently have.
Since I teach in a K-2 school with 1,000 students and we are not a Title I school, technology is very limited because there are not a lot of funds available for this area.
I have a limited number of iPads in my classroom, which have all been purchased through fundraising or grants. It is my goal to have one iPad for each student in my classroom to use to enhance their learning each day. Technology can allow learning to go in many exciting directions!
