My students need a rug to sit on during whole group lessons and read alouds. Currently, my students have to sit on the floor for these things, and I would like to end that!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 3rd grade ESL students, many of whom are from low income families. They are a very diverse group of students; representing a number of different countries and languages. Many of them are brand new to the country and they are all working on developing their English language abilities.
These students will have a variety of needs and they will represent a wide range of abilities and skills.
They will need a lot of strategic instruction delivered in small group format in addition to whole group, partner work, and group work format.
My Project
In an ESL classroom, one of the most important things I can do to ensure that my students understand a skill is model it for them first. A power-packed, short, whole group time is an essential way to start a lesson. I can use this time to show my students a video to activate background knowledge, model the skill myself, and call student volunteers to come up and model the skill for their classmates. I use whole group to kick off every reading lesson, and I often use it to begin new units in math or introduce new concepts before we break off into centers. I am also always reading out loud to my students, because they LOVE it. Lastly, whole groups is when we squeeze in all of our valuable "turn and talk" time; when my students can practice all the language they're learning with a partner. Shouldn't they have a comfy place to go to during all this instruction?
Currently, my students have to sit on the floor when we do a whole group lesson, and if we get this rug, it won't have to be this way!
I truly believe that when a classroom is welcoming and cozy, students enjoy being there more, and they will learn better. This rug will add an element of coziness to the room that is currently missing. Who wants to sit on a cold, hard floor when they are trying to learn? This rug will make my students excited for whole group time. It also has clear spaces that will serve as a visual support for my students. This will cut down on issues regarding personal space and sitting in other people's areas; which will help with behavior and attention issues during whole group time.
