My students need 6 sets of leveled books for our classroom library in order for successful implementation of the Daily Five literacy program this fall.
Imagine an environment where kids are empowered to make their own choices for selecting appropriate texts to enhance their daily reading practice. Our school is implementing a plan this fall that is based on a premise of teaching students to identify reading strategies using a wide variety of materials.
Students in our K-1 classroom arrive with a spectrum of skills and readiness.
The heterogeneous student population is comprised of a mix of high socio-economic advantaged students to those living with the disadvantages of moderate poverty. Our school is known for a standards based curriculum with a philosophy of age appropriate instruction as our decided emphasis. It is a place where differences are celebrated and creating a sense of community is a priority.
I have come to appreciate the challenges of teaching students of such diversity in age and readiness. There is an intricate balance that must be achieved to celebrate newly founded skills and polishing to perfection of those skills students arrive with on the first day of school. The experienced students serve as literacy mentors to the developing students. Yet, the mentors learn so much about communicating with the younger students some days it's hard to tell who is in fact is more enriched by the process
My Project
As a veteran teacher of more than 15 years of teaching, I am willing to reinvent the wheel and surrender outdated direct instruction methods to a more individualized approach of literacy instruction. I am asking for 6 sets of leveled readers to help my students become self reflective regarding their own progress in the acquisition of reading strategies. With these books, students will also become an expert in selecting 'just right' texts to practice.
These leveled books are a integral part of the success of reading instruction for a portion of the day, and then later in the day they are utilized for students to read a dedicated period of time for pleasure. The multiple purpose uses of these resources includes but is not limited to, mentor books to support mini lessons, free choice reading materials and guided practice reading lessons. Students who develop the stamina to read for a duration of time and create self determined literacy goals are bound to become successful.
Thank you for reading this request.
Should you choose to fund a portion, please know your contribution is making the revitalization of a veteran teacher's literacy program a reality. Providing these materials will create the hum of student driven engagement as these books will become the cornerstone of a new library centered classroom. Getting the right match of text and ownership of reading strategy is indeed not rocket science, but truly is magic. Do you believe in magic?
