Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Computers are one of the most essential elements of our lives today. Incoming college students are expected to have a basic understanding of computers, and many jobs and professions require computer use on a daily basis.
I teach at a small college-prep charter school in a low-income area of California.
Many of my students have overcome tremendous personal struggles, yet they have an unwavering dedication to school and a strong desire to enter into meaningful careers as adults. Unfortunately, the majority of my students do not have computers or Internet access at home, which puts them at a significant disadvantage in our increasingly technological world. If my students are going to attain their goals, they must be able to compete with students who have full access to computer technology at home and at school.
My Project
Due to the drastic budget cuts over the past several years, my school has been unable to buy new computers for classrooms. The computers we do have are quickly becoming unusable. With fewer computers, it has become nearly impossible to design classroom lessons in which all students can utilize computers.
While this one computer that I am requesting will not solve all the technological woes in my classroom, it will make a difference in a very real way. It will allow additional students to complete Internet research related to not only my history class, but also related to colleges, jobs, and scholarship opportunities. It will allow students to type their essays and papers. It will give them access to email and it will allow them to use programs such as PowerPoint to develop class presentations. Ultimately, I believe that every additional computer I have in my classroom will expose my students to the skills they need in college and in the working world.
In today's world, education is much more than note-taking and textbook-reading.
Thank you in advance for helping my students to acquire the practical skills that will allow them to succeed in the world beyond high school.
