My students need more nonfiction texts for a variety of reading levels. I also want to increase our supply of kinetic sand for our STEM bins to give more students access to it.
Teaching first grade is my passion. Some of my first graders unfortunately come from challenging backgrounds with things no child should ever encounter. Many students receive free or reduced lunch. Some come to school in the dead of winter with no hats or mittens. No matter what their situation is at home, my first graders are still so eager and excited to learn new things. They all deserve the best education and that is my ultimate goal each and every day.
My Project
I have a variety of readers in my classroom and they all love reading nonfiction texts. Some of my levels do not have a great selection and could use some new and exciting titles to engage them. Each week, students select new books at their levels to read during Reader's Workshop. We call this our "Book Shopping". Every day during Reader's Workshop, students read these books independently and with their reading partner. Many students even choose to read from these leveled bins during free choice time! Your donation will put many new books right into my students hands.
I introduced STEM bins this year and my students went crazy over them!
They work together in centers to create different objects with different materials such as Magna Tiles, Legos, pipe cleaners, etc. These objects usually relate to a monthly theme (Cupid's arrow - Valentine's Day, shamrock - St. Patrick's Day). The kinetic sand will be a great addition to these STEM bins to build their creativity, as well as their sensory skills! They just love the feel of it! Students can shape and mold the kinetic sand into objects very easily. And what's better is that there is hardly any mess!
With the new structured and rigorous curriculum these little ones partake in, there is not a lot of time for creative play. I have introduced play centers for my students. After they come in each morning and complete their morning routine, students can choose a play center to work at. Students also have play centers at our dismissal time. Now they have more chances to just be kids! Your donation will give us more kinetic sand and fun molds for us to use in these play centers, as well as our STEM bins!
