Picture yourself curled up on the couch with your favorite book after a long day of work. This is the level of joy and relaxation I would like my students to experience while interacting with books in my classroom.
I have a wonderful group of kindergarten students entering my class this fall, many who are just beginning to discover the wonders of reading.
Our Illinois school is Title I, with 63% of students coming from low income families, and 16% being English Language Learners. Many of our students have very few books at home and lack the quiet space needed to fully immerse oneself in a good story.
My Project
This year I am blessed to have been moved into a classroom with a space that can be entirely dedicated to a library. After weekly shopping trips to the local thrift stores this summer, I have obtained a kindergarten library that I know my students will enjoy. In addition to taking books home, I would like students to have a quiet, comfortable space in the classroom to enjoy reading and looking at books. I have requested colorful beanbags and pillows to not only attract students to the library, but keep them comfortable while they read alone and with partners for extended periods of time.
Instilling a lifelong passion for reading is the number one goal I have for my students each year.
Providing an appealing, well-stocked, and warm classroom library to my kindergarten students will attract them to a space in which they have no choice but to open up a book and get lost in the world of reading!
My students and I greatly appreciate your consideration in funding this project!
