Wanted: A Community of Scientists!

My students need 30 project display boards and 46 thermometers.

My students come from a diverse but challenging urban community where over 90% live in poverty and many speak English as a second language.

Many of my students come to school without basic supplies like pencils, paper, notebooks, etc. My school lacks resources, particularly now with a lot of programs cut with the current economic crisis. My students may not come to school with a book or a pencil, but they do come with many questions. We have a lot of state standards to cover, but one area where students can actually follow their curiosity is the requirement to participate in scientific inquiry. They may choose their own question, design their own research, create their own hypothesis or prediction, design their own investigation, measure and record their own data, analyze and present their results. This is real science, and it connects with their individual interests.

My students would benefit from an organized science fair. They would have an end product to share their learning and interests. The whole school could see where they spent a lot of energy, time, and enthusiasm and share in the excitement. A tool for measurement that we are missing are thermometers. My kids need the opportunity to measure the temperature of the air, liquids, soil, mini-environments, etc., depending on their investigation. My students also need display boards to make their work look polished and uniform. These boards could be reused year after year. It will help build a school culture that values science and scientific endeavor. It will prepare my students for a future in science.

Your contribution to this project will make it possible for my students to complete a science project that they can be proud of and share with the rest of the school. It will be a memory that they will be able to hold onto for the rest of their lives, it will help them be more critical thinkers, and it will prepare them to become a part of a globally competitive scientific community.
