Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school I teach at is in a rural community where my students are not as fortunate as other students. Many of my students come from a migrant background thus, moving with the season of the crops and resulting in many students still in transitional bilingualism between English and Spanish.
As a >95% free and reduced meal school, my students struggle to make it to school with basic supplies, and funds for school-wide necessities are lacking.
For instance, my school was the old high school and now has been retro fitted to be the current middle school but we are busting out at the seams while serving about 600 kids with approximately >95% of them being free and reduced lunch. Moreover, the neighborhood they live in is being influenced with crime, gangs, and graffiti. However, it comes to my surprise how much their wanting to learn even when their neighborhood and lives are not that perfect.
My Project
In our STEM class for Design & Modeling and advanced robotics my students can benefit from the iPad Pro features by being able to publish thier own created content such as YouTube tuturoials with the iMovie or Clips app, being able to use 123D Sketch autocad apps to print from our 3D printer of thier designs/ideas, and to create augmented reality content of construction or deconstruction of thier robots or engineering ideas. These modern tools and apps will give these students a competitive advantage in the 21st century and will improve students’ soft skills as many of my assignments incorporate business, marketing, and art design with all of our design challenges. My student wish list is to have a class set (30 iPads). One example of how well these materials play a role in my class was when I allowed them to use my personal iPad Pro for an assignment. Their assignment was a commercial and business plan presented to the school district of how the iPad could greatly reduce the schools districts budget costs on printer and paper copies thus allowing for free’d up monies to be use towards students or other building necessities.
