Help me give my students a journal for correcting sentences and privacy folders that allow all student to do their best work! After my first year of teaching, I realized that these materials would make a huge difference!
A lot of my students are refugees or are learning a new language so language arts can be extremely daunting. My teaching philosophy focuses on making school a fun, safe and welcoming place for them to learn.
I teach reading, writing and social studies at my vastly diverse, large public school in Chicago so I am able to focus all my energy and passion on creating a love of literacy and the world.
One way that I love to foster a love for reading is by having my students set stamina goals and reward them for their achievements. I have an amazing friend that helps me be my "book fairy", who drops off new books for our classroom library when they reach their goal, which always keeps my students motivated and excited about new books! My students gain a huge love of learning and it’s amazing to watch. These second graders try their best every day and are evolving as learners and human beings.
My Project
As I am nearly the end of my first year of teaching, I am making a list of things that did and did not work. I feel like this first year brought many victories and lessons and I am so grateful. I was able to experiment with materials to see how I would teach with it and how to get my students engaged.
For this project, I am asking for two things I believe would have helped me a lot this year!
The first thing I am asking for your support with is a "correct the sentence" journal. I purchased one for myself this year to come up with a way to teach with it. I tried to work with my students without them having their own copies thinking it wouldn't be too much to keep up with... Well, lesson learned! Correcting a sentence a day has helped my students a lot in their own reading and writing; so, because of the exercises, I definitely want to use this next year! But I would love for each student to have their own journal.
The second thing I am asking for your support with is privacy partitions. I love for my students to get up and out of their seats whenever they can. I have found that having them test out of their seat really helps them focus. With privacy partitions, I do not have to worry about any wondering eyes and can assess them accurately.
