Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This middle school is a wonderfully diverse school with a cross-section of students that come from a community that speaks over 10 different languages and filters into one of the largest public high schools in the state of Connecticut. We are a Title I city school with about 80% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The diversity of our population is what makes this school so special.
There are theories that income has a significant impact on educational performance.
We are a school where over 80% of the population are from low-income families. We are classified as District Reference Group "H," which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in. Our students, who are also children, come from hard-working and very diverse backgrounds and cultures, and often do not have the resources that allow them to succeed at higher levels.
My Project
Math class has become integrated with Reading concepts. There as been a huge emphasis on vocabulary that is used in all of the content areas. Our curriculum is rich with word problems and our population is diverse with students that speak many different languages and abilities.
A good way to reinforce math specific vocabulary and concepts is to have them displayed on a word wall and anchor charts.
That allows students and teachers to reference them when needed.
Unit vocabulary is put on sentence strips with magnetic tape on the back. We have magnetic white boards. The vocabulary is an interactive part of the lesson. The words/terms on sentence strips can be slide into the questions to reinforce how it is used in or applies to the problem. Once the concept is finished the words or terms are kept on the wall for reference throughout the school year. Anchor charts are used in class to record class discussions and key concepts. The charts are clipped up with magnets during each lesson or unit. The concepts are visible and can be referred to as needed. The markers, magnetic supplies and sentence strips are used to create the interactive word walls and the anchor charts.
