I am a teacher in a school for students with severe to profound mental challenges. I see that my students are faced with many obstacles both in and outside of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I keep my students engaged and provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences that are age-appropriate. My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous. They like to move and love lots of positive attention.
There are things that may prevent my students from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me.
By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
When students graduate from high school it is a big fanfare. They get caps and gowns, speakers, parties, yearbooks and photos. There are presents and balloons. When students with special needs age out of school at 22 years old, they get a pat on the back.
As my students age out of school, they get to paint a tile and we mount it on a wall to remember the time they were here with us.
By donating to my project so we can continue to honor those students who were with us through their 22 birthdays. Their next step is a work site, so this is their last big hurrah. Please help my students have one last party before they leave school.
