The 2018-2019 school year has not started yet, but the students that come from the area I am in on O'ahu are usually very motivated and caring individuals with a love for the 'aina (land)! My school is an IB school, so they it is my job to teach these young learners the IB attitudes of: appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, creativity, curiosity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect, and tolerance. Once these IB attitudes are recognized, we motivate students to work towards the IB learner profile characteristics of: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded risk-takers, balanced and reflective individuals.
Last years' students were very motivated to take action for our 6 transdisciplinary units taught throughout the year.
They were quite empathetic and want to help people in need. For example, with our 5th grade buddy class, we had a bake sale to raise money to help those effected by the Central California wildfires and mud slides. After our 'Sharing the Planet' unit, students began to realize the impact trash and especially marine debris has on us locally as an island and globally. They started picking up trash of the beach when they went, and also recycling, up-cycling, and using less plastic!
My Project
The supplies I chose will help with classroom needs. For example: I have requested: glue sticks we are always cutting and gluing in math, files and labels to help with filing student work and assessments, pocket charts, colored index cards that the children use for a "Sharing the Planet" unit, cut out letters and paper for bulletin boards to display student work and other various office supplies used in the classroom each day. The drying rack I requested is because the students are always making things in the creation center! I requested a small carpet to use for calendar so the K students don’t have to sit on the tile floor. The white boards I asked for will help students practice letter formation using primary lines. I requested math games revolving around the areas of time, geometric shapes, base ten, addition and subtraction concepts, these all are correlate with the core math curriculum.
The thing I am most excited about is our mural wall that will make a statement and educate everyone who come on campus about marine debris and the use of plastic on our island.
It will be a collaboration project with our 5th grade buddies. The 5th grade teacher and I will have the K and 5th grade students design a simple picture having to do with saving the oceans from plastics and marine debris. Then we would vote on the winning picture and paint it on a school wall in between our classrooms. The interesting thing I want to do is have the kids GLUE (over time) light pieces of plastic students find on the beach for a 3-D effect and a statement about how much plastic is in our oceans. I need supplies such as: paint, painters tape, glue, and a tarp for this project.
